Pablo Picasso was one of the most inventive and successful artists of the 20th Century. Picasso believed that if one wanted to know what someone looked like, one should take a picture. If one is painting a portrait he should show the individual's personality and character. During a visit to Africa, Picasso saw tribal masks and other art objects of the African Culture. On his return to Paris, Picasso used the African art with its flat planes and geometric shapes to create his most famous art style, Cubism. He was able to show his subjects from all sides, and he incorporated symbolism and bold colors to show character and personality.
Fifth grade art students will be learning to draw portraits and then using those portraits to create their impression of Picasso's Cubism.
